Here at HGLFC we’re always keen to push forward and provide more chances for girls and ladies to play football. So when the opportunity comes up to put ourselves forward, we won’t miss it.

Disney+ and Save our Squad ran a competition on the Dave Berry Breakfast Show on Absolute radio to provide much needed support for grass roots football clubs. All we had to do was write a beautiful ode to the club and hope for the best.

Thankfully the club has Ben Jones, the newly crowned Bard of Rossendale, in its ranks and Ben stepped up with a gorgeous poem which perfectly caught the feeling of playing for HGLFC. But to perform the poem we needed a HGLFC player and, luckily for us, Ellie Brierly volunteered. Ellie performed the poem beautifully and so in went the entry.

Monday 14th November it was played for the first time on the Dave Berry Breakfast Show. We knew it was good, we knew we stood a chance. But the rest of the week had entries from around the UK and all had their merits.

Up rolls Friday and we were listening intently to the breakfast show. The build up, the suspense, the waiting was intolerable. And then the announcement. We won!!!

Thank you to Disney+, thank you to Dave Berry and the team at Absolute Radio. The prize really helps the club deliver more football to more girls. Thank you to Ben & Ellie a writer and performer duo to be admired. But most of all, thank you to everyone involved in HGLFC, player, coach or volunteer. The club doesn’t exist without you, this prize is recognition for everything we do and stand for.
