It was off to Pleckgate Road for The Storms' eagerly awaited cup final against Accrington Stanley. The Storms had brushed aside some stiff competition to get to the final and the girls were ready to go. Todays team was made up of Rose Whelan, Holly Speechley, Emily Speechley, Eva Brown, Olivia Turner, Olivia Gray, Poppy Jones, Gracie Millard, Olivia Newbitt, Rosie Thompson, Daisy Holly, and Nicole Boustouller.
The girls have been working extremely hard in training and it was certainly showing in their games; and today was no exception. It was a real end to end game in the first half with chances from both teams. The Storms attacked well and Jones and Newbitt had some great chances. Millard and Brown provided a strong defence working well together which was important against Accrington's striker. Whelan worked well in goal and sealed the defence further. The first goal of the game came on 15 minutes from Newbitt with a great finish and an even better celebration. The first half carried on more or less how it started with great play from both teams. Speechley (E) and Holly shone in midfield which allowed Jones and Newbitt to push on.
Both teams were quick to start the second half, but it was Accrington who scored with a much deserved goal on 31 minutes. Speechley (H), Turner and Gray were very much involved with a number of great tackles and turns taking the pressure off, but Accrington followed up on their first goal with a second on 35 minutes. The rain started but the Storms' performance wasn't dampened by the score. They continued to push and Thompson worked hard on the wing against some strong players with Boustouller also supporting well from the back. It was a nail-biting end to the second half with an amazing Jones effort saved by the keeper and Millard pulling off a goal-line clearance to keep the Storms in it.
In the end it wasn't meant to be for The Storms and although there was disappointment there were smiles all round from players and supporters for an amazing performance against a good team. This certainly won't be the last final The Storms will see as they have developed as a team in such a short space of time. Well done girls!!
